The House of the Tailor of Gloucester
Beatrix Potter was born in London and spent many years of her adult life as a farmer and countrywoman in the Lake District. She also had connections with Gloucestershire, where her cousins lived. It was during her stay with her cousin, Caroline Hutton, at the Hutton family home, Harescombe Grange, near Stroud, that she found the little shop in College Court, Gloucester which came to be used for the illustration of the shop belonging to The Tailor of Gloucester in her book of that name. Today the little shop is preserved as a museum and a place to buy all sorts of Beatrix Potter items.
For the past few years, Sue Birtwistle has been the official artist of The House of the Tailor of Gloucester in College Street, Gloucester and has produced a series of prints and original paintings of places important to the life of Beatrix Potter.
